It Finally Happened

I knew the day would come when Claire would start asking questions. I just didn't think it would be so soon. We don't even have a baby yet, so where is this coming from.

Yesterday, driving in the car, this was the conversation:

Claire: Mom, when I was a baby and came out of your tummy did I drink milk out of your arm?
Me: My arm? No, my breast.
Claire: Babies drink milk out of their mommy's boob
Me: Yes, babies drink milk out of their mommy's breast
Claire: GROSS

Where did this come from?????

From me... sorry Maiya got out pictures of her as a baby and there was one of her nursing. Claire said eww she is biting your arm. I said no she is drinking milk and that seemed to satisfy her curiosity. forgot to give you a heads up.

Oh while its the topic though I have to say I am the opposite I have never dreaded this particular topic. I have always corrected every cartoon since forever that shows a baby drinking a bottle. I always say its better if they get milk from their mommie's boobies!! I want them to be completely proud of breastfeeding.

Janie, I absolutely hated breastfeeding and I'm never doing it again. Can we still be friends? Please? I really like you! I just have really gimpy boobs ... and I produce hardly any milk ... and the mastitis nearly killed me. lol.

Sarah ... I got a total kick out of Claire's questions ... just wait till she wants to know how she got OUT of your stomach ... and what s-e-x is. My mom always told us that "when the baby is ready to be born, a special place opens up to let the baby out." We immediately assumed that it was the belly button, and left her alone. I guess that when my kids ask, I can show them my 'zipper' and leave it at that. lol.

I remember asking what s-e-x was ... and my mom told me "Sex is just whether you are a boy or a girl. If you're a boy, you are of the male sex. If you're a girl, you are of the female sex." That satisfied me for years and years. And she was totally honest!! I think we were at the doctor's office one time or something ... and she showed it to me on a form she was filling out. Back then, forms said SEX:____, not Male/Female. Funny.

So, I just figured that boys were making fun of girls for being girls whenever I heard the big three letter word. lol.

Janie: Glad to hear it came from you

Janette: Oh, the innocence! I was never that naive, lol :D I don't know how I want it with my kids. My parent just kept us in the dark about everything, I always hated that. How do you know when enough info is enough.

When I was preg with Liza, T asked me how the dr got the baby out...with a little questioning back, I found out that he just wanted to know if he used his hands...kids sometimes don't want to know too much! Unfortunately, he knows it all now...:)

I'll be your friend Janette always, but I will try to talk you into trying again if the topic comes up.

LOL!!!! P has had a million and one questions since I have been pregnant. That is just the way he is. The answer Andrea gave about the Doc. using his hands was not enough for him. SO I told him the complete truth in the simplest terms and seems seems just fine with it. He knows how I had him and how others have c-sections and he has watched a few baby stories with me.

Okay, that is hilarious! When I was nursing Jackson (eons ago), I would catch Leah with her shirt pulled up and she would be "nursing" her baby dolls. I thought I would die! I always taught Leah the correct words and references for body parts, because that is what the experts said to do, and I have always regretted it. I fear her talking about it in the middle of church or a crowded store or library. Whoever (of the experts) said to teach it from the beginning wasn't a parent and led me astray! Thus far we have only heard embarrassing references at our house though. Whew.

Wow I really am the most liberal parent here! I applauded both my toddler girls "nursing" their dolls - its natural, we are happy when they mimic us in the kitchen and that is just another form of nurturing. Why perpetuate being embarrassed about something beautiful and natural? And I corrected them about what orifice babies come from before they even really asked because they both assumed I "pooped out Maiya" and I couldn't have them thinking that. And they know daddies help put the baby in the mommies tummy. The subject ends there for now, but ladies we need to let go of this dread... really, we make it more of a big deal than it really is.
