When Ladybugs Bite

Yesterday we were playing at the fabulous Janie's house. The girls were out riding bikes (more like tormenting each other) and we were sitting out front watching. All of the sudden Claire was screaming and running towards us saying, "Get it off, get it off." I ran to her and to my surprise I find a ladybug on her arm. She is screaming, "It's biting me!" I brush it off and say, "Claire, ladybugs don't bite their nice." And then I look, she has been bitten in not one but two places. What the. . . I just kept saying that it must have been something else that bit you. Luckily nurse Janie had Calamine lotion to relieve the sting. By bed the bites had gone away.
Before I went to bed last night I decided to do a little research online. I found out that ladybugs do in fact bite. Although, once source stated that their bite doesn't hurt. After seeing the bites on Claire's arm and hearing the screaming I tend to disagree with that source. So watch out, not only are the insect in Texas bigger, they are also meaner. :D

Actually, ladybugs don't bite, as I understand it: what bit your friend was most likely the Asian Lady Beetle. They belong to the same family as our North American ladybugs, but are actually an Asian import. Because they're so hard to tell apart though, our native ladybugs are getting a bad name, poor things!
