You Can Smell The Past

I was out walking this morning, when I walked past two maple trees. There was a slight breeze and the scent of maple leaves lingered in the air. I was quickly transported back to my childhood. This smell brought back memories of playing outside with my brother, walking to school, and asking my mother if maple syrup came from our maple tree. All that, from one brief smell.

Are there any smells that remind you of something or someone????

A couple of mine are:

**Anything smelling close to formaldehyde, reminds me of dissecting fetal pigs in high school.
**There is a certain AVON lotion that I love the smell of, it came in a yellow tube, it reminds me of my Grandma Jensen.

What are your smells????

I love the smell of coconut ... or anything pina colada ... it transports me back to a 4 week trip to Hawaii when I was 18. Carefree. Paid for by mom and dad. No worries. And a great tan.

The smell of barf transports me back to the toilet. Every time.

This is sooo true! Sometimes I will smell an indescribable smell and it takes me back to a particular time and place. An example: I think Idaho has a certain "Autumn Air" smell...kind of crisp, fresh, maybe a little smoky, but I love it. It reminds me of waiting for the school bus, wearing long sleeves, playing on the school playground before school each morning, and carving pumpkins for Halloween. I was sad when I moved to Texas because it was so different...then one fall morning I stepped outside and could smell that same smell, faintly. It brought me right back home.

Sometimes I'll get a whiff of some unnamed cologne and it transports me back to awkward stake dances when I was a teenager :)

One of my lotions (which I can't use anymore) reminds me of having morning sickness. It helped me at the time, but now it makes me feel sick!

Sunflowers perfume reminds me of trying out for cheerleading when I was in sixth grade.

Peach and vanilla totally bring me back to Tucson and college. It also reminds me of my grandparents who drove me around my first week in school.

And there is this old musty smell that always reminds me of my grandparent's house. Or maybe of all houses of older people. Wait-will mine smell that way someday too?

jess-

I miss that same "Autumn Air" smell here. There is just something that I love about crisp autumn air in October- football games, sweaters, playing in the leaves-- that's the only season I miss here.

I remember the fetal pigs in high school too. Stinky, but pretty cool!

Being a construction kid, sawdust and dirt are smells that bring a swell of fond memories.

Jergens lotion with Aloe reminds me of when I was dating my husband - I was going through some medical treatments and my skin was VERY dry --- we both ended up using that lotion almost daily.

I can't think of any others even though I KNOW I have MANY smells that trigger memories! Good post, Sarah... I love deep yet simple, it looks good on me ;)

I love the smell of my Sweet Grammie's perfume. I still smell it on her necklaces that I got about a year ago when she died.

I also love the smell of new school supplies. It takes me back right away.
