Ohhh - love San Antonio. First off - the most amazing outlets in San Marcos could eat up a whole day. Second - the river walk with great little shops, ice cream stores, and amazing Mexican food. Have fun!!
Stay on the river walk---it is so nice to just walk out of your hotel and be right there. Personally I think the Alamo is over rated but then again I was like 18 years old the last time I went:) SO maybe my views would have changed by now! And since you are a history teacher I am sure you would disagree with me on that! Just saying I *might* not stand in line to walk through if it was a LONG line and a hot day....but that's just me...lol:) The Mexican food there is AWESOME:) Sorry it has been 14 years since I went...so obliviously I can't give better suggestions (like the actual names of places:)
It is a cool hotel where you guys are staying (I read Janie's blog). Clay and I didn't stay there, but we went and toured it one night because we had heard it was haunted!!! Have fun!!! Do a boat ride if you have a chance. It is nice and relaxing.
The Alamo usually has historian volunteers that offer tremendous perspective, so see if you can track one down. It really is an amazing place. In my opinion, the best (and better priced) Mexican food is found OFF of the Riverwalk. Have a BLAST!!
PS!! You should stop in Austin on the way down and take a tour of the capital! They offer free tours every 15 minutes so it would be an easy break from the road to take and it would totally be worth your while. Austin rocks my world. (I'm having high school flashbacks right now.) Love it! Miss it! Go do it!!
